From Blah to Spa: 5 Tips to Transform Your Home Bathroom
It’s 2016 and, while we’ve all made New Year’s resolutions to help us change for the better in little or big ways, some things remain the same–like being busy. With work, school, commutes, kids, activities, volunteering etc., it’s hard to find some down time to relax at a spa and recharge our batteries. Here are five small tips for transforming your home bathroom into a comforting oasis to enjoy after a long day of “Go!”:
Candles have such a calming effect on the brain. When you place them here and there around your bathroom, just lighting them can take a boring space to a zone of tranquility. We recommend buying a combination of different sizes for an eye pleasing variety, and a mixture of unscented candles with only a couple, calming scents that compliment one another. Our favorite scent teams are woody pine with delicate lavender, or fresh linen with bright cucumber.
There’s been a growing interest in essential oils for their medicinal purposes, but our favorite use for them is and always has been to spruce up an inviting bubble bath. Add a few drops to your evening soak and your life will never be the same. Lavender, Bergamot, and Frankincense have calming effects, while lemongrass can help with minor aches and pains. Infused water is one of the more enjoyable ways to hydrate and it’s a really simple way to bring a spa element to your bathroom time. There’s almost nothing more refreshing than climbing out of a hot, detoxifying bath and drinking a glass of cold, crisp water infused with all the goodness of natural vitamins from fresh fruits, herbs and even vegetables. Here are three of our absolute favorite infused water recipes, written in shorthand:
- 5 Strawberries, quartered; 1 lemon, sliced; 5-6 basil leaves, torn
- 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced; ½ cup diced honeydew melon; 1 handful torn mint leaves
- ½ cup pineapple, cubed; ½ cup mango, cubed; 1 apple, peeled and sliced
All you have to do is place the fresh elements in a pitcher and top with two cups of ice and about 6-8 cups of water and let it infuse for a few hours before drinking. You can get some other infused water recipes here.
Communing with nature is an incredible way to find your center and relax. When you decorate your bathroom with some beautiful flowers, you’ll not only bombard your senses with color and smell, you’ll also bring in a natural way to clean the air. Ferns, delicate African violets, and, our personal favorite, an elegant orchid, are all excellent choices to bring a natural element to your home spa.
You’ll be surprised by how some plush towels can take your bathroom from average to amazing. I received some thick, enormous Egyptian cotton towels one year as a gift and my life has never been the same. Not only do they absorb and wick away moisture from your skin, being able to wrap up thoroughly while I dry, do my skin regimen and give myself a manicure and pedicure is awesome.
